Individuals with developmental disabilities (DD) deserve to be valued for their uniqueness and potential, rather than defined by their disability. And the mission of the Montgomery County Board of Developmental Disabilities Services (MCBDDS) is to empower people with such disabilities so they can live productive and rewarding lives aligned with their goals and choices.
Part of such efforts involves helping the community better understand developmental disabilities so barriers to equality and inclusion can be eliminated. That's why each March, MCBDDS joins County Boards of DD statewide in campaigns that promote Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and National Disability Employment Awareness Month. These efforts follow a common theme, and include a variety of awareness efforts that include community events and programming; educational, advocacy and self-advocacy initiatives; media features; and advertising that speaks to the potential of people in this minority group (see above).
