[ARCHIVED] MCBDDS launches free Crisis Management Training for Providers

Open hand stopping closed fist

The MCBDDS Behavior Support Services Department is offering crisis management training for Direct Support Staff (DSP). This training is for both agency staff and independent providers. We will be offering Crisis Prevention Institute’s (CPI) Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® Training. Topics include de-escalation techniques, positive support strategies, communication considerations, risk assessment and staff responses to risk behaviors. Physical skills for self-protection and safe holds will also be taught. Class size is limited. A minimum of 12 participants is required per session, if the minimum is not met then registrants will be scheduled for a different date. This is a 2 day training.

Training objectives include:

  • Identify and know how to respond to various levels of crisis behaviors.
  • Recognize how to manage your own consistent, calm behavior to influence a positive outcome in a crisis.
  • Learn strategies to strengthen nonverbal communication.
  • Develop limit-setting strategies when verbally intervening to de-escalate defensive behaviors.
  • Learn safety intervention strategies to maximize safety and minimize harm.
  • Learn to assess risk.
  • Explore a framework to help guide staff and the individuals in distress through a process of re-establishing the relationship.

CPI-certified trainers will provide training. Staff will be certified in using trained interventions for one year.
