This course provides comprehensive instruction on medication safety, documentation, infection control, and the legal and ethical responsibilities of medication administration. Participants will learn proper procedures for administering oral medications, topical medications, inhaled medications, eye and ear drops, and other approved medication routes under the supervision of a licensed nurse trainer.
Course Topics Include: Ohio DODD medication administration rules and compliance; The “Five Rights” of medication administration; Reading and understanding medication labels and physician orders; Proper documentation and Medication Administration Record (MAR) completion; Recognizing and responding to side effects and adverse reactions; Infection control and universal precautions; Medication storage and security requirements; Error reporting procedures. Upon successful completion, participants will receive DODD Medication Administration Certification (Category 1), allowing them to administer routine prescribed medications in approved settings.
Who Should Attend: Direct Support Professionals (DSPs); Homemaker Personal Care staff; Agency employees working in residential or community settings; Staff seeking employment in DODD-certified agencies.
Certification Requirements: Successful completion of the DODD-approved curriculum; Passing the written exam; Demonstration of competency skills with a Nurse Trainer; Ongoing annual review and nurse delegation as required
Please note:
- Full participation in both days is required to become Medication Administration Certified.
- Students must have a GED/ HSD and a copy of the certificate must be sent to On The Horizon prior to class.
- The cost is $165 per student to cover class time for both days. On The Horizon will send an invoice prior to class and it must be paid in order for students to attend the class.
